Four BC Hospitals Recognized for Surgical Care Quality

Burnaby Hospital, Chilliwack General Hospital, Lions Gate Hospital and Surrey Memorial Hospital were recognized in November by the American College of Surgeons’ National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) for exemplary results for patients in surgical care.

The four hospitals were among 89 to be recognized out of 719 international sites.

Burnaby Hospital, Lions Gate Hospital and Surrey Memorial Hospital were recognized in the “all cases” category for outcomes in the areas of mortality, cardiac, respiratory (pneumonia), unplanned intubation, ventilator for more than 48 hours, renal failure, surgical site infection and urinary tract infection. Surrey Memorial Hospital was also recognized in the “high risk” category, along with Chilliwack General Hospital. Using validated, risk-adjusted data from NSQIP, sites are able to compare their data provincially, nationally and internationally as well as identify specific areas on which to focus their improvement efforts.

“This is the biggest patient safety program in the world so to get this kind of an honour is stupendous,” said Dave Williams, Fraser Health’s executive medical director for quality and safety.

We want to congratulate the hospitals for their fantastic achievements!

BC hospitals have been participating in NSQIP since 2011 and 24 sites are currently part of a BC NSQIP collaborative which we support in a number of ways, from providing data support to strengthening engagement between sites through webinars and learning opportunities.
